{ Update 1-4-09:  511 Palestinians have been killed & 2,500 injured}

As many are aware, In addition of two and half years of economic strangulation, the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza have been living for over two months without electricity, gas, food, and medical supplies do to Israel…the question was, what’s next?

This morning Israeli F-16 jets bombarded Gaza with over 100 tons of bombs dropped. According to the BBC over 225 people have been murdered and about 700 wounded. This being “the worst attack in Gaza since 1967 in terms of the number of Palestinian casualties” [BBC]

“Once again the world watches as the state of Israel commits some of the worst war crimes, and the most egregious violations against the international law”

This message is not about informing you of current events and it is far more than a condemnation of this terrorist act…it is not about, Muslim or non-Muslim, Palestinian or Zionist, it is about Oppressors and the Oppressed.

It is a reminder that whether we wish to accept the truth or deny it, to help the oppressed or do nothing at all…Allah (swt) does not need us but we need Him (swt), Allah is the most Just and Justice will preval on the day of judgment…Allah(swt) hears the pleas of the oppressed, may they be Muslim or non-Muslim…the question is, what have you & I done?

Do we feel their pain? Do we strive to help them? At the minimum are the oppressed in our prayers? And this goes beyond Palestine, to the world at large.

  • Hadith: Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet sent Mu’adh to Yemen and said, “Be afraid, from the curse of the oppressed as there is no screen between his invocation and Allah.”[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 43, Number 628]

Meaning any supplication made by one who is oppressed, Allah (swt) will never deny that supplication.

It is clear who an oppressor is when massacres are committed, yet you and I are not protected from the “curse of the oppressed” just because we didn’t drop the bombs…if we do nothing to help them, just view the images and move on with our lives as they suffer, then do we not fall under their “curse” when they ask for our help & we do not respond?.

If for any reason you do not fear the duaa, then know that as Muslims it is a command for us to help the oppressed.

  • Hadith: Narrated Anas: Allah’s Apostle said, “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. People asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?” The Prophet said, “By preventing him from oppressing others.” [Sahih Bukhari,Volume 3, Book 43, Number 624]
  • The Prophet order us to do seven thing of which is the fifth is “to help the oppressed” [for full Hadith view Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 43, Number 625]

Again, if you do nothing or all that you can, it is for your own lose or gain respectively.  Each of us will be accountable for our actions (or lack of)…so ask what have I done? Do I truly care?  At the least we should all be praying for them…

We put our trust in Allah(swt) as He is our Wali (protector) and best of aids. We know with certainty that Justice will prevail and the oppressed believers will find their rewards in the hereafter.

We make duaa that Allah (swt) places peace and tranquility in the hearts of the oppressed, that He blesses them with strong faith and patience, that they are steadfast on the straight path, are written among the companions of the right hand, well pleased and secure on the Day of judgment and among the inhibitions of Paradise. Ameen.

We ask Allah to place love in our hearts for the oppressed and those in need, to forgive us for what we should have done or said but didn’t, that He (swt) gives us the strength and courage to stand up for them and the truth, to give us wisdom and knowledge to know truth from falsehood, to make us a source of comfort & security for others, and we ask Allah (swt) to forgive us for our weakness for we cannot handle the burden that they bare…

Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us; our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Maula (Patron, Supporter and Protector, etc.) and give us victory over the disbelieving people.
(Quran: Ch2, v286)
